Stanage Plantation is the most famous bouldering on Peak gritstone: a dense cluster of boulders at the eastern end of the Stanage edge, with problems that range from easy warm-ups to some of the hardest and boldest lines in Britain.
The climbing
Gritstone is coarse, rounded and unforgiving about skin. Most problems here are short and powerful, with slopers that work only when the grit is cold and dry. The classics in the V4 to V6 range are genuinely excellent — technical, balancy, and often decided by a single foot placement.
Because the edge faces south-west, the boulders dry quickly after rain but also bake in summer. Early mornings in February are the best sessions of the year.
Weather and the grit window
Gritstone is porous and loses friction fast in warm or humid air. The local rule of thumb is that if the forecast is above 12 °C, head for the shaded side or don't go. Winter is the season, and a cold north-easterly is the best condition you can get.
The rock is soft relative to granite. Do not climb on it wet, and be careful with the tops of the easier problems, which are worn and rounded already.
Getting there
The lay-by at Upper Burbage Bridge is the standard parking and fills by 09:00 on winter weekends. Bus services from Sheffield run to the nearby road on Sundays. There are no facilities — no toilets, no water, no shop.

-
Hold types slab · friction · mantle
Open beta
Short grit slab on the north side. Best used to calibrate your feet before the harder lines.
-
Hold types sloper · crimp · mantle
Open beta
Technical face on coarse slopers. The crux is a long move to a sloping ledge; get your heel up before you reach.
-
Hold types traverse · sloper · heel-hook
Open beta
Long low traverse along the main boulder. Sustained rather than hard, and conditions-dependent: it is a different problem in a warm breeze.
-
Hold types arete · sidepull · heel-hook
Open beta
Leaning arete climbed on its left. Hard first move off a poor sidepull, then a delicate finish on rounded grit.

Peak gritstone is heavily used and the vegetation is fragile. Do not clear bracken or heather to build a landing, and keep pads off the bilberry.
